Windows Vista SP2 Update (KB948465) Causing an Infinite Boot Loop
Wednesday October 21, 2009 by Nick Niesen.
My dual-boot Mac Pro fell victim to a Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 Update (KB948465) which caused it to reboot, then say installing updates Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, and reboot again, continuing this process infinitely. As I began reading other reports of this it seems like maybe Microsoft had now had the problem cleared up, but I am afraid this is probably not the case (the most recent report of this problem I am seeing is on Oct 19 2009). No, it’s definitely not cleared up!
For my MacPro? Seems dual-boot was causing nothing but problems anyways so I am now converting over to a single boot system. I had 4 hard discs installed in the computer so I have pulled the two Windows formatted discs and migrated the data over to my laptop.
Another possible solution I have read here is to boot from your Windows Vista DVD-ROM and select to restore your computer from a recent point. Sounds like it could be worth a try however you still run the risk of losing data and changes made during the last X number of days.
The problem (though unconfirmed) could be that I am running a dual-boot system but other reports here are suggesting otherwise, as single-boot systems are also crashing. In either case this is another Corporate blunder that might make you feel like your stuck in a hopeless situation. The fact is that you didn’t cause this problem…they did. If you can, pull your drive and migrate your data to a fresh Windows install and definitely stay away from the Vista SP2 update for now.
