Connect to a Workgroup Share from a Domain - Windows 7 Bypass Domain Login
Posted By nick on Thursday March 04, 2010

So I installed Windows 7 onto my new at-work workstation yesterday and am in the process of getting everything setup. During this process I ran into a major stumbling block and in order to help someone with the same computer head-ache I've opt'd to post my findings (as I normally do).

Here's the problem:
I have most of my useful data stored onto a laptop so I can work from home or in the office at anytime. When I am in the office, I share that data onto my office workstation. Ok, sounds easy enough, but my laptop is shared as a Windows Vista Business Workgroup and my office workstation is Windows 7 Professional connected to a domain.

When attempting to connect to the Workgroup machine, Windows 7 defaults the domain into the login credentials. After a couple of hours of searching (literally) the solution hit me like a ton of bricks. When connecting to the computer, add a slash to the beggining of your username. This tells Windows that the computer you are trying to connect to is not a part of a domain.

Instead of your usename looking like this "admin", your username should actually be typed as "/admin".

I hope this helps someone out, honestly I wasn't able to find this information posted anywhere. The idea just turned on like a light-bulb. I hope this helps someone out and feel better I know I have the information online for future reference, i'll probablyrun into this problem again in the future.
