HP Scanjet 8350 DMA Timeout - Windows 7
Posted By nick on Monday March 08, 2010

Having recently upgraded to a computer I built with Windows 7 I was expecting a few hitches; but not nearly as many as I have! Fortunately, I seem to have a natural nack for computer troubleshooting and diagnostics, so after 5 hours of troubleshooting I have another problem solved. This one really having nothing to do with Windows 7.

After setting up our HP Scanjet 8350 onto the new Windows 7 workstation and running into a problem where everything appeared to be working up until the actual scan process where the application would just freeze, I immediately assumed the problem was a compatibility issue.

Not so fast, after countless hours of debugging and troubleshooting, I found that the 10' USB cable was too long and should be swapped out with a 6' cable. Voila! Though the longer cable worked in my previous Windows XP setup, for some reason the same cable was not compatible with the Windows 7 setup. So if you're running into the DMA Timeout problem on the HP Scanjet 8350 (or other related scanners), try swapping out your USB cable and change USB jacks to insure you are not using USB 1.0 or 3.0.

Cheers!
